Workshops/Training for People with intellectual disabilities or autism

Fees and Registration InformationHealthy relationships and sexuality

Friendships are an important part of everyone’s life, especially in developing one’s self identity and self-esteem.

People with intellectual disabilities sometimes find it hard to have meaningful relationships with others, so their social network is very small, usually consisting of family, family friends and carers or support staff. It often is a situation where they may not understand or be aware of the social skills needed to participate in groups and activities that would help them have a more fulfilling life.

This program is designed to help people learn positive skills to have a bigger social network. The participants will learn why friendships are important, the benefits of working at making new friends, and maintaining existing friendships. They will learn about themselves, the various types of friendships they can have and the responsibilities and rights that are present in all friendships.

They will learn and practice the specific skills needed to meet new people, ask friends out, keep friends and solve problems that come up with friends. In addition, they will develop a clearer understanding of relationships that are more than friends, and the important boundaries that keep them safe.

Money management

Living on a limited, fixed income is a reality for many people with intellectual disabilities. Understanding how to manage your money and have enough to live on is very important.

This workshop series provides an overview of saving, spending, setting goals and becoming familiar with a monthly budget sheet. Through repetitive discussion the concepts will be understood and applied to real life scenarios both in the classroom and in the community. Participants will leave the workshop with tools such as budget sheets, calculator, and methods to sort their money to help them in their personal money management.

Menu planning and budgeting

Eating healthy, making healthy choices, planning the menu and having enough money to do it all. It is hard to put it all together without some help and advice.

This workshop is designed to help people learn what foods are healthy, daily portions and preparing a menu that works. It incorporates tools to use in planning, searching and purchasing healthy food.

Being a good employee

Knowing how to do a job is not all there is to being a good employee. It requires a person behaving in positive ways, having good work habits, being able to communicate effectively with people you work with and becoming independent of support.

This workshop is an interactive, practical session where participants will gain an understanding of the different requirements of being a good volunteer or employee.

Sessions are private and confidential for participants.
